In contrast to the gray sky that prevails almost all year in Lima, the monarch butterflies (very common there), with their vibrant orange, were to me like a friendly shake in the midst of drowsiness. Finding them by surprise in the middle of a dull day or a depressing situation was like seeing a window of light reminding me that beauty “is”. They became for me like messengers of hope, small flashes of beauty encouraging me to open my eyes one more day. They wove with their wings a bridge between my inner world and the present I had to live in and in which it often hurt to dwell.
